Drug Category: NMDA antagonist. Generic Name: Memantine. Contents: Tabs 10mg: Memantine HCl 10 mg. Indications: Moderately severe to severe Alzheimer's dementia. Dosage: Adults: Initially 5mg daily during 1st week increasing at weekly intervals in increments of 5mg daily to maintenance of 10mg twice daily by 4th week. Children: Not recommended. Contra-ind: Severe renal impairment, Lactation. Precautions: Moderate renal impairment, epilepsy or predisposition to epilepsy, history of convulsions, recent Ml. uncompensated heart failure, ucontrolled hypertension. Pregnancy. Interactions: Amantadine, ketamine, dextromethorphan, levodopa, dopaminergic agonists, anticholinergics, barbiturates, neuroleptics, baclofen, dantrolene, cimetidine, ranitidine, procainamide, quinidine, quinine, nicotine, hydrochlorothiazide.
